INCI: Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter


Shea Butter is an off-white or ivory-coloured fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree. The saponifiable fraction of Shea butter is composed mainly of stearic acid and oleic acid while the unsaponifiable fraction is composed of bioactive substances that are responsible for its medicinal and dietary values. Shea butter is a solid at room temperature and melts at body temperature, thus making it an useful ingredient for skincare and cosmetic products. Shea butter is edible and is used in food preparation in Africa. Shea Butter is also used as a substitute for Cocoa Butter in chocolate industries.

Uses

1. Skincare and cosmetic
Shea butter is great emollient and moisturizer for the skin, scalp and hair even without further processing. Conditions that Shea Butter is useful includes: Cracked Heels, Dry Cuticles, Dry And Chapped Lips, dermatitis, eczema and as a night time moisturizer for hands and feet. It prevents trans epidermal water loss and helps tissue cell regeneration and softening of the skin. It diminishes various aging signs: wrinkles, fine lines, stretch marks and scars and helps protect the skin against sunburn, preventing erythema and reducing further risk of sun-induced skin-cancer.

2. Hair Care
2.1 It can be used in place of hair cream to hold frizzy and loose hair, instead of using commercial hair pomade products, try out Shea Butter.
2.2 It moisturises the hair reducing breakage and soften hair cuticles. It is also beneficial for split ends and reducing frizz.

3. It has been reported to lower serum cholesterol by forming mixed micelles with cholesterol and bile acids in the intestine thereby inhibiting its absorption and increasing its excretion.
